Message From the Founder

“Abdullatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture” cares about the future of mosque architecture; this is the main objective of the Award. Over the years, we have witnessed the construction of numerous mosques that accumulated records of mosques numbers worldwide, and consequently, it contributes to the multiple problems of mosque architecture given the expansion of cities and the complexity of life. The main question that we raised upon initiating this Award were about the possible added value to Mosques architecture, and how we can make mosque architecture rebirth and matching contemporary challenges, let alone adequately tackle them; this building type is pivotal and ‘symbolic’, for it gives our cities their identity. However, we did not consider ‘form’ only, but took into consideration other vital parameters beyond “form” such as urban issues that influence mosque architecture. Urban relations of the mosque with the architectural context is faced with different urban and city planning intersctions, and so this leads us to think about the socio-cultural impact of the mosque and its role in shaping social practices within a local network that binds individuals in the community visually, functionally and emotionally.

– Shaikh Abdullatif Al Fozan

Chairman of Board of Trustees

It is never an easy work to initiate and to maintain a successful establishment, in which attempts to tackle the multi-layers issues of mosque architecture. Because, the Mosque is a building that closely connected to human daily life, which relates to social, functional, technical, as well as humane dimensions, So the Mosque architecture is rather complicated, despite the seemingly simple or straightforward forms. This special, serious and impartial Award is aiming to put mosque architecture within the broader global domain. This makes it an important initiative that will bring to light, without a doubt, leading future models, and will initiate an incentive for those interested in architecture.

So, I consider Al Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture is a significant and positive turn point that I personally expecting its rewards soon. The development of mosque architecture and exercising the urban, technical or contextual aspects must evolve along, and will stimulate architects to develop appropriate architectural solutions for place, worshipers and its city inhabitants, all of which are prime aims of the Award. Lastly, Al Fozan Award is looking forward to deliver messages that will inspire faithful persons in our country that represent Muslim’s pivot and their spiritual destination.
