The Concept

Abdullatif Al Fozan Grand Mosque Competition is a closed competition to design a complex of both a Friday (Juma’ الجمع ) Mosque and the headquarters for Abdullatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture,the expected unique design should reflects the mosque of the future, in which would reflect the new strategies of Saudi Arabia.

The Project

The competition will be managed by Abdullatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture, and it aims to attract innovative designs submitted by the invited architects from all over the world.The mosque will be located at the center of the new town of Tharwa,Khobar, eastern region of Saudi Arabia, Tharwa Town is considered one of the most prominent urban development projects at Khobar city, its location has been carefully selected, and it aims to have distinctive and luxurious designs, hence, this new mosque is planned to be the most important architectural and urban element within this context.

Design Brief

The proposed complex should be designed as a large mosque, which is planned to house 1500 worshippers for all types of prayers, in addition to the mosque,a unique design is needed for the headquarter of Abdullatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque (AFAMA)

Capacity Requirements

Mosque
  • Worshipper capacity for men: 1200 PAX
  • Number of toilets is (24) for men
  • Worshipper capacity for women: 300 PAX
  • Number of toilets is (6) for women
  • Open prayer area that can accommodates 200 worshippers.
  • Imam House 180-200 SQM : (3 bedrooms – living area – dining area Kitchen and 4 bathrooms)
  • Muathen House 180 – 200 SQM : (3 bedrooms – living area – dining area – Kitchen and 4 bathrooms)

Design Guidelines

  • To produce innovative and bold designs highlighting the Mosque as a cultural and distinctive landmark for the site
  • To feature designs with a special character making them a focal point in the project
  • The design should make the most of natural light and ventilation
  • Comprehensiveness of the technical report for the development stages of the architectural concept
  • Interconnection of Mosque site plan and its facilities with the surrounding to be well studied
  • The design should be feasible
  • Taking into consideration the economic aspects such as energy consumption rates and recycled building materials
  • The Main Prayer Hall should preferably be rectangular, such that the longer edge is along the Qibla wall
  • The mosque plaza should be designed in a way that excess capacity of worshippers can spill out in the plaza space during Friday/ if required.
  • The mosque must be separated from the headquarter.
  • it’s preferable to have residence of imam and muathen as separate buildings

Jury: To be specified

  • International jury will be announced at later stage.
  • Number of jurors are maximum 5

Deliverables

Competitor’s submissions shall depict sufficient information, drawing, diagrams and narratives which explain their Concept Design and innovative approaches at its best way. The 3D perspectives shall be of highest quality.

Eligibility

Invited architects must be officially registered as professional architectes, and authorized to work at Saudi Arabia.

Methodology

All eligible designs will be accepted Award will shortlist The participants will present their designs to jurors.

Awards

  • 1st prize USD 100,000
  • 2nd Prize USD 75,000
  • 3rd Prize USD 50,000
Note: In case of winner, the prize sum considered part of the contract value

Winner

The winning entry will be invited to enter into a Design
Contract to deliver the detailed scheme
