Al Fozan awards
Abdullatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture was established in 2011
The primary goal of this esteemed award is to promote the evolution of contemporary mosque design through a meticulously curated and specialized database.
The award highlights the significance of modern mosque architecture, which honors the spirit of traditional mosque design while integrating contemporary concepts to carry forward the profound spiritual and architectural heritage into the future.
The award is triennial
The winning mosques will be awarded by an esteemed international jury of experts in mosque architecture. The jurors will carefully evaluate and comparatively assess the submissions to determine the winners.
Candidate mosques will be classified into three categories: Central Mosques, Jumaa Mosques, and Local Mosques. Additionally, special prizes will be issued for innovative ideas that contribute to the evolution of mosque architecture concepts in the twenty-first century.
The Award: Named in Honor and Recognition of Its Founder and His Distinguished Charitable Legacy
Nevertheless, it is managed by an executive committee and a general secretary. The executive committee is responsible for nominating jurors for each cycle and overseeing the assessment process through to the selection of the awarded mosques.
Additionally, a bilingual book in both Arabic and English is widely published for each award cycle, featuring critical and descriptive architectural analyses of the shortlisted and awarded mosques. This book is typically launched at the prestigious triennial awards ceremony, which is held in different cities around the world

Throughout the years, we have witnessed the rise of numerous mosques around the world, adding to the global landscape of Islamic architecture. Yet, with the rapid growth of cities and the complexity of modern life, mosque architecture has faced significant challenges.
The key question we raised when establishing this award was how to add value to mosque architecture. How can we inspire a renaissance in mosque design that not only addresses but also embraces contemporary challenges? Mosques are integral to our cities, providing both identity and spiritual connection.
Our approach extends beyond aesthetics. We considered essential aspects beyond form, such as the urban dynamics that shape mosque architecture. The mosque’s relationship with its surroundings is crucial, as urban planning and development significantly influence its design. This led us to consider the socio-cultural role of the mosque and how it binds communities together visually, functionally, and emotionally.

It is never easy to initiate and sustain a successful establishment that addresses the multifaceted challenges of mosque architecture. As a structure, the mosque is deeply intertwined with daily human life, touching on social, functional, technical, and human aspects. Despite its seemingly simple forms, mosque architecture is inherently complex. This prestigious and impartial award aims to place mosque architecture within a broader global context, making it a critical initiative that will undoubtedly highlight future leading models and serve as an incentive for those passionate about architecture.
I consider Al Fozan Award to be a significant and positive turning point, and I am confident that its rewards will soon be evident. The evolution of mosque architecture, alongside urban, technical, and contextual developments, is crucial. This award will inspire architects to create architectural solutions that benefit not only the place of worship, but also the worshipers and the broader community. Ultimately, Al Fozan Award seeks to convey a message that will inspire the devout in our nation, which stands as the spiritual heart of the Muslim world.
