Retal Mosque Design Competition

The Concept

The Retal International Competition for Mosques is launched with the goal of designing mosques that reflect Retal’s community-focused vision. The competition aims to develop innovative mosque designs for Retal’s urban projects in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, particularly for Nesaj Town 2 in Dammam.

The Project

This competition is organized by Retal Urban Development Company, under the supervision of the Abdullatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture. It invites participants from around the world to submit innovative designs for two mosques within the Nesaj Town 2 scheme in Dammam, eastern Saudi Arabia. As one of Retal’s prominent urban developments, Nesaj Town 2 has been meticulously planned to ensure both aesthetic beauty and luxurious design. The mosques, a key part of the project’s essential facilities, will serve as central symbols of pride, enhancing the sophistication and identity of the community.

Competition Goals

1. To highlight Retal’s role in community-focused contributions.
2. To create a competitive environment that encourages innovation and creativity among architects worldwide.
3. To engage the architectural community in presenting ideas aligned with the aspirations of future generations.
4. To develop new mosque design visions that address the needs of future generations.
5. To create designs that harmonize with human, environmental, and functional challenges.
6. To support the architectural community through initiatives that have a lasting impact.
7. To foster designs that align with the quality of life goals outlined in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.


Design Terms & Requirements

Participation is open to architects, universities, and architectural offices from all over the world, in the following categories:
1. Architects: Local and international professionals.
2. Universities: Students and faculty members may form design teams and participate on behalf of their institution.
3. Architectural Offices & Studios: Local and international firms.

Design submissions should:

  • Feature innovative, bold designs establishing the mosque as a cultural and architectural landmark for the two sites.
  • Highlight unique characteristics making the mosque a focal point in the project.
  • Maximize the use of natural light and ventilation.
  • Include a comprehensive technical report outlining the development stages of the architectural concept.
  • Ensure the mosque’s site plan is well integrated with its surroundings.
  • Be feasible, with consideration for energy efficiency and recycled materials.


Competition Terms & Conditions

  • Participants are fully responsible for the content of their submissions.
  • Participants may submit designs for one or both sites.
  • No reward will be granted to any participant whose submission is disqualified for non-compliance with competition rules or plagiarism.
  • Winning projects are not guaranteed to be executed.
  • Participants may publish their projects after the winners are announced, provided they reference the competition.
  • The designer retains sole ownership of the design, and no third party may claim any reward or privilege.
  • Abdullatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture and Retal Company reserve the right to publish projects on any platform.

The two mosque sites will be located within Nesaj Town 2, Dammam, and are intended to accommodate 540 worshippers each.

Site One: Nesaj Town 2, Dammam

  • Male Worshippers: 450
  • Female Worshippers: 90
  • Male Toilets: 9
  • Female Toilets: 2
  • Imam’s Apartment: 180-200 sqm (3 bedrooms, living area, dining area, kitchen, 4 bathrooms)
  • Muathen’s Apartment: 180-200 sqm (3 bedrooms, living area, dining area, kitchen, 4 bathrooms)


Site Two: Nesaj Town 2, Dammam
Dimensions:
  • 88m x 61m x 88m x 61m
Capacity Requirements:
  • Land Area: 53.7.2 sqm
  • Male Worshippers: 450
  • Female Worshippers: 90
  • Male Toilets: 9
  • Female Toilets: 2
  • Imam’s Residence: 180-200 sqm (3 bedrooms, living area, dining area, kitchen, 4 bathrooms)
  • Muathen’s Residence: 180-200 sqm (3 bedrooms, living area, dining area, kitchen, 4 bathrooms)


Awards

  • First project, First prize: 75.000 RIYAL SAUDI / 20,000 USD
  • Second project, First prize: 75.000 RIYAL SAUDI / 20,000 USD
  • awarded TO THE FIRST PRIZE WINNING DESIGN FOR EACH PROJECT
