The Award

Abdullatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture was established in 2011, it’s targeting the architectural, urban, and technical aspects of mosques all over the world, and It will be awarded to the related designer/architect. The award is triennial; the winning mosques will be awarded based on assessment of an international architectural jurors experienced with mosque architecture, who will relatively evaluate and assign the winning mosques. The candidate mosques will be categorized into three categories; Central Mosques, Jumaa’ Mosques, and local mosques.

Cycles

The Award has started its first cycle in 2011, and it was restricted on the allocated Mosques in Saudi Arabia. In 2014, The Award held its second cycle in a wider scope encompassing other Mosques across the Gulf countries. Simultaneously, the third cycle of the Award held in 2017, is planned to compromise the entire summation of Islamic countries. Progressively, the fourth cycle held in 2020 is expected to be a worldwide award for Mosque Architecture.

Nomination

The nomination process spans from the start of the first year of each cycle and lasts till the middle of the second year. During this period the unique and distinguished mosques within the targeted area are nominated. However, the nominated mosques must be built heretofore and in-use for two years by the time mentioned. Furthermore, these mosques are a real life incarnation of the mosque architecture conception in the twenty first century, which are targeted for nomination. En masse, all mosques are unexceptionally approved; albeit, nomination is based on the following mosque typologies:
Central Mosques, Jumaa Mosques and Local Mosques

The Award

Cycles

When the award began its first cycle, the focus was on the mosques within the kingdom of Saudi Arabia since it was found there. Nevertheless, as it was planned, it was expanded in the second cycle to include the mosques within the Gulf countries. Following the plan, the award boundaries are expanding to include mosques within the Islamic countries in the current cycle which expected to be awarded in 2020 while planning to expand the limits to of the award to include the mosques all over the globe in the fourth cycle.

Nomination

Nomination starts in the first year of each cycle and last till the middle of the second year. During this period the unique and distinguish mosques within the targeted area are nominated. However, the nominated mosques must be already built and in-use for two years. Furthermore, mosques express the concept of the mosque architecture in the twenty first century are the targeted mosques for nomination, although all mosques are accepted with no exceptions. Nomination is done based on the following mosque types: Central Mosques, Jumaa Mosques and Local Mosques.
